Ex #1: He’s not the best looking but he has a really nice personality.
Context/Analysis: I started with a negative statement but I try to pair a positive statement to it so it doesn’t seem as bad. In this example, I am speaking on someone who isn’t very attractive but his personality is more attractive than his physical features.

    Ex #2: I didn’t get a high grade but atleast I passed.
Context/Analysis: I am talking about my low grade in a class. Although I said I didn’t get a high grade (negative statement), I continue by saying I still passed the class (positive statement) which makes the negative statement not seem so bad.

    Enumeratio:
Ex 1: I like everything about about it. Its big, has lots of space, great view, and its got a pool!

Ex 2: This vehicle features various things including power steering, heated seats, LED headlights, 9′ inch touch screen navigation, rear camera, and more more options.
Analysis: Breaking everything down helps the person understand what is being said. In this case the sales person breaks out all the features of the car and in doing so it helps the buyer better understand what benefits there are and they can better understand everything.

    Antanagogue:
Ex 1: I got into a car accident but was thinking about buying a new car anyways.
Analysis: The moment this happens create kind of a coincidence. It helps the audience understand what the speaker is saying and showing how everything tied into each other. The negative which was a negative vibe ended up being a good having a positive outcome.
Ex 2: I lost my belt but needed a new one anyways.
Analysis: This creates a better understanding on how a negative outcome ended up having a positive result. This device helps readers picture how a negative can turn into a positive at the right time.

Enumeratio- I love everything about him, his smile, his personality, his way of caring.
Analysis- this is enumeration because I’m listing everything I love about him one by one in detail. I have actually used this when I was talking to my friend about my boyfriend. I was telling my friend everything that I love about my boyfriend.

Enumeratio #2- (Did you pack everything for the senior trip) yes I packed everything, my bathing suit, my towel, my hairbrush, clothes, deodorant, sandals, perfume, lotion, money.
Analysis – this is enumeration because I’m listing everything I packed one by one. I have used this when I was in high school and I had to go to my senior trip, my mom asked me if I packed everything and I told her yes listing all the things I packed to see if I’m forgetting anything.

Antanagogue- studying stresses me out, but It’s all worth it when I pass my classes.
Analysis – This is Antanagogue because I’m saying something negative which is studying and I’m following that with a positive phrase which is passing my class and my semester. I have used this when I was talking to my teacher in high school.
She asked me why I looked so stressed and I told her because of studying but then I said it will all be worth it when I pass my classes and then I can finally relax.

Antanagogue#2-He lost his job but at least he gets to spend more time with his family.
Analysis #2- this is antanagogue because Im saying something negative with something positive. This can be used when you are talking to a friend about a man that used to work day and night and lost his job. It’s a negative point but then this leads to him spending more time with his family which is something good for him and for the family.

    Anatanagogue:
Example #1- “The car is not pretty, but it runs great”

Analysis #1- Antanagoge places a criticism and a compliment together to lessen the impact. This example is perfectly describes, because you’re referring to the vehicle’s good performance as a reason to excuse its unattractive appearance.

Example #2- “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”
Context #2- You’ve been up to a bad start this month. Your life is miserable and your hanging on loose thread that could be cut anytime now. But, despite all the difficulties you’ve faced your till positive and optimist that the rest of the month will be fine.
Analysis #2- When life gives you lemons, make lemonade is a proverbial phrase that is used to encourage people to be optimistic and have a positive attitude when facing any misfortune or challenges. Antanagoge

Example 2: I got into a bike accident but I was able to sue the guy and make some easy money.

Enumeratio #2: I’m finally out of my last class, now I will go to the bank, gym, then home to relax and do homework.
Context: This is in the context of mostly my everyday life, when school is in session or during weekdays. I name places like the bank, gym, and my home.

I name things in a list “bank, gym, then home”. At the end of the list I provide more details using words like “relax”.

Antanagogue #1: I struck out on a changeup, but at least now I know I need to work on my timing.
Context: This is in the context of softball which is what I play. This would happen in the setting of a softball game which is the part of “struck out on a changeup”. Then me thinking about what I need to work on would be afferthe game.
Analysis: This represents Antanagogue because this rhetoric is supposed to state a negative comment then balance it with a positive. Therefore this is an example because striking out is the negative, but the positive is that I learned something new about my softball skills.

Antanagogue #2: Last year I thought I lost my airpods, but the whole time they were in the washing machine. I didn’t notice until after I took my clothes out, although they still worked, I learned to always clean out my pockets before laundry.
Context: This is in the context of something being lost, my airpods. Then It would be used when doing chores like laundry. I then state where my airpods were found, in the washer.
Analysis: Antanagogue can be clearly identified in this example because I give the reader context before telling them the actual situation. After that I tell them the negative, which would be me thinking I lost my airpods. Lastly I give the reader a positive which was finding my airpods in the washer and learning to clean my pockets before laundry although they were not damaged.

This rhetorical device adds a counterargument to the king statement because he doesn’t see life as a slave as living at all so he rather fight. The effect it has on the listener is that the king stands with his people and not afraid to fight. Without the rhetorical device the statemen lose this counter argument and sense of unity between the king and his people.
